For the startup part, you probably have a lot of crap starting up you don't need. Have tried disk on my (much) newer PC (MOB Asus P5G41T-MLX) dated 2011 with no luck. XP can wait. Thanks. I've been away for a couple days. In all the dozens of win98 PC's that crossed my desk, the CD drive was always a normal HDD connector connected as an ATA slave. I knew you were just making some of these up.

Here is the support site that's specific only to that Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop. Loading... Probably shouldn't have any USB stuff connected, nor PCMCIA cards, but other than that I don't know what to suggest. On the question of virtual OS, you need a fairly powerful PC with one of several possible virtual OS hosts installed.

Memory for the laptop. I'm repeating steps 2-4 in cliffordcooley's post actually...... I'm afraid it'll run even slower than it does now. It has win2k installed, unfortunately the logon password is unknown.

May I recommend Fedora Core 3? Seemed to read the disks, but would not boot. You should then be able to copy the installation files to the HDD.
